In Florida during the spring of 1849 the office called The Darling Store was opened and the native Seminoles Indians attacked the office on 17 July 1849. It is now a grave site and is marked with a grave stone marked near the office. In the attack two clerks of the office were killed and one injured.
Trails for hiking go through the woods to the place where there used to be the office. The trading post and the events that happened then are located in the visitor center. Picnic tables and chairs are available here to have a great lunch and relax.
San Marcos De Apalache State Historic Site has a long history. White men first arrived here in 1528 and started making ships. In 1539 Hernando de Soto also followed the same route. By 1679 the Spanish started building a fort with the help of logs of trees coated with lime water, looking like a stone house. Just three years later it was burned by pirates.
Today a visitor center containing exhibits and artifacts covering the real history is built on an old marine hospital. This site is open from Thursday to Monday from 9am to 5pm and is closed on every Tuesday and Wednesday, Thanks Giving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The hiking trail leads in to woods through the historic ruins.
With a colorful past Indians Key State Historic Site and is a part of Florida’s history. In 1830s when it was considered to be the key for entrance, to the Dade County. The buildings and cisterns are from that era.
