How Anabolic Steroids Can Be Abused

It is estimated that two-thirds of those who abuse steroids began using these drugs at age sixteen or lower. Three quarters of the total population of steroid abusers in the US are thought to be high school students. The remaining quarter of steroid abusers is thought to be composed of guys of 25 years average. Age 25 is indeed the average age of most bodybuilders registered in athletic and sports clubs. The more tragic side effects of steroid use and abuse are experienced in the low age brackets.

Female offspring who have been exposed to steroid effects whilst still in the womb have been known to start developing male genitalia while still retaining the female genitalia. Children that have been exposed to steroids often suffer from altered genitalia development as well as stunted height. What makes the situation a bit more bearable is the fact the abuse of steroids in pregnant women is seldom and rare. Children below the age of 12 are also not known to be using steroids.

Anabolic steroids are used by various athletes to increase their muscle mass during training. Steroids are known to increase the rate at which muscles are developed. Many athletes are convinced that victory for them can only come as a result of steroid use. It has never been proven that the sole use of steroids can result in the development of muscle. Some of the growth can be attributed to psychological factors. Anabolic steroids are also used in the medical treatment of certain ailments where the patients suffer from muscle wasting and loss. This is common for cases of cancer and some types of surgery.

In the beginning only a few sports were known to be using steroids for enhanced performance but the proliferation of these drugs has seen their use spread to almost every type of sport. In fact the only two sports that have never been caught with steroid use offences are figure skating and ladies’ field hockey. The use of steroids is also not limited to sports alone. Young people who are not engaged in any sporting activity are said to be using the substances to improve their looks and health.

The use of steroids in the development of bigger muscles is not a swallow and grow affair. It takes lots of rigorous fitness training to do so. There is also no evidence to prove that life can be lengthened if steroids are used with or without fitness training. What has been documented though is evidence to prove that excess use of these drugs can bring about liver disease, arterial hardening, heart ailments, male sex organ atrophy, and premature halts to bodily growth.

The use of steroids is a hazardous engagement that must be taken with a lot of care and precaution. Whenever possible it is prudent that the bodybuilder learn to train the body in a totally natural fashion that will not in any way cause some serious ailment or side effects.
