While there are some who are getting to enjoy the living in a brand new home with a lot of innovative features and materials, the most of us are living in slightly older to really older homes that could have a lot of outdated features and materials. Oh well, we make do with what we have. It is usually not that big of a deal, but in some cases the materials that your home has been built with could cause health problems if they get contaminated by mold.
The materials that you should be the most concerned about is sheetrock, insulation, and wood products. Sinks, toilets, showers floors, and bathtubs are also vulnerable. All of these substances are porous to some degree and can absorb moisture. Except for the bathroom and kitchen sinks, etc, the rest of these materials also provide a food source for the mold.
The only way you can prevent mold from infiltrating these materials is by making sure they do not get damp or wet. When they become wet by water and the warmth is enough to cause the growth to begin, it does not take very long to have a real problem. Leaking behind faucets and pipes in the walls can wet sheetrock and wood. This will cause mold.
When insulation is allowed to get wet because of a roof leak, this can cause mold to grow in and behind it too. The wood itself will grow mold when it is wet and stays that way. This is one reason that keeping your roof in good repair is so important. The longer you ignore roof leaks, the more damage it is probably creating.
Porcelin surfaces like those in the bathroom and kitchen can get mold when they are not regularly cleaned. It is a good idea to use a disinfectant when cleaning these areas and mold will not be a big risk.
Today homes are being built to better withstand mold growth because they have additives in them they will not allow mold to grow. Microbial resistant sinks, tub, and so forth are wonderful new products for homes. Also among the latest in mold resistant home buildings are sheetrock with no paper and insulation like spray foam.
If you are thinking about building a new home, you should investigate all of these new products. They are a great investment and will only make your home worth more in the long run. You will be able to enjoy living there more when you do not have to worry about health hazardous mold growth.
