Aging can be difficult, and one of the most common and first seen signs of aging is hearing loss. Frequently older adults find themselves in situations where they have to be standing in a certain direction to hear well, or not hearing much of a conversation in a crowded restaurant, or asking someone to repeat themselves multiple times.
These are the first signs of hearing loss, but many senior citizens assume that it is a circumstance, a situation causing the problem rather than actual hearing loss.
So how do you know if you have reached a point where hearing difficulties have become so frequent that you need a hearing aid?
Ask yourself the following questions to determine if you need a hearing device:
1. Do I catch myself asking someone to repeat themselves so often that it’s almost a reaction now?
2. Do I turn the volume of the TV up so loud that other people say it’s too loud?
3. Do rooms with a lot of background noise cause voices to become muffled to the point that I can’t understand the conversation?
4. Do I avoid certain social situations because I’m embarrassed that I can’t always hear correctly?
5. Has anyone ever said, Did you hear the question I just asked? and I lied and said yes, even though I never heard a word?
6. Do you feel annoyed or cranky after a conversation?
7. Does it seem like people talk softer than they used to?
8. Do you sometimes not hear important words in a sentence?
9. Has anyone complained about your hearing?
Of course, the best way to find out if you need a hearing aid is to go to your doctor and let him test your hearing. An audiology test can be done, which will detect how you hear different tones & sounds, and will verify whether or not you need a hearing device.
Once you have this test done, your doctor can suggest different hearing aids depending on your need. Above all, don’t allow your embarrassment of not hearing well or aging stand in the way of getting assistance.
Many times, after getting a hearing aid, senior citizens report that their quality of life increases tremendously. After all, communication is the foundation of relationships and if you can’t hear someone talking to you, you automatically feel isolated and distant. Hearing aids also assist dramatically in reducing background noise (such as in a restaurant) so that you can focus on the people you’re socializing with.
Contact your physician for more information about how to schedule an audiology test or for more information about hearing aids.
