Living in the northern parts of the US and Canada means at this time of the year winter is upon us. For most the shorter days and longer nights along with the bitter cold leaves much to be desired.

Unless you’re like me, I love winter and here is why. First off if you live in a place where winter really happens why bother getting mad or depressed you need to embrace it! I like winter because of the beauty, the endless outdoor activities, the cold nights by the fire with some comfort food and a nice glass of wine.

Now let’s get to the beauty first, during these months trees are covered in beautiful white snow, all of the dirty parts of the city and countryside are covered in a clean blanket of snow. If you’re lucky to live near water frozen ice has its own beauty.

Now for the outdoor activities and there are plenty. Tobogganing, cross country skiing, downhill skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding and this is just a starting point. For myself the activity of choice is snowboarding. I happen to be very geographically blessed in that I live beside the rocky mountains. We have well over 15 huge ski resorts within a 3 hour drive and many are only an hour.

For many that ski or have tried skiing snowboarding can appear to be more dangerous and many are concerned about hurting their but falling down. While all of this is true to a point, taking snowboarding lessons will greatly reduce your chances of falling. At the end of the day snowboarding is my favorite sporting hobby it really is freeing. It’s the best way I have ever found to totally stop my brain from thinking about the stresses of daily life.

Of course being in the rocky mountains has its own healing affects. Another winter sport that is quite popular is ice skating or playing hockey. If you happen to be lucky enough to live in Ottawa Canada’s capital city they have an annual skating festival on the Rideau Canal which happens to be the longest skating rink on the planet!

Here you can not only enjoy the outdoors you can also take in the many food stands that are right on the ice. The world famous Beaver Tails are had by simply skating up to their kiosk right on the ice!

It’s doesn’t matter if you live near Mountains or the largest skating rink on the planet winter can be a great time of the year. Embrace winter for its beauty, endless activities and of course a good old fashioned snow ball fight.
