If internet or World Wide Web was described as a revolutionary technology when it was commercially introduced a decade and a half back, in the past decade or so, it had undergone tremendous transformation of sorts, morphing seamlessly from a unidirectional info pathway to a more interactive and dynamic full fledged communication and entertainment medium with wide reach. Now, people use the internet not just for checking emails or posting some info in personal websites, but also as an academic medium without limitations, to communicate through voice as well as text, upload and share personal videos and other multimedia files, and share the information they know/want way beyond the physical boundaries of nationality and language, to name a few. Why speculating? Now it is even possible to use one personal computer as a substitute for the television to watch various channels/programs seamlessly.
Yes, this feature is called Internet TV or iTV. Internet TV lets viewers watch their favorite programs through direct streaming via internet broadband. What users need to do in order to access internet TV is just to subscribe for the live feed. Transmitted over the internet using multicast protocols, the streaming is often inexpensive that most providers offer it to the netizens for free of cost, like the over-the-air broadcasting of TV channels to viewer homes a couple of decades back. Another plus with internet TV is that it could reach out to a larger section of audience as the limitations of previous television distribution models followed worldwide such as closed hardware, closed software, closed network - does not apply for live streaming over the internet.
Another technology that was found to be far more reliable than cable television, both in terms of transmission quality and its all weather coverage, is the satellite TV or Direct-to-Home telecast. Unlike other modes of transmission that uses cables - at some point - to transmit signals to user homes, satellite TV, as the term indicates, rely on direct satellite signals, which are then captured using a dish antenna at user home. The cost incurred on the customer is for the installation of the dish antenna, plus the fixed fee for the channels they wish to view over a month. In other words, satellite TV lets one view the channels he wants to view, and pay only for those channels. Nothing more, nothing less!
To sum it up, internet TV and satellite TV has turned the television viewing scenario in the world, on its head. These technologies allowed a larger section of people access to television programs, cut across continents and nationalities, made it far more affordable to the masses, offered more freedom in terms of program selection and manipulation, and made the transmission weather independent, especially in the case of satellite television. Newer and superior technologies may evolve in the future for sure. But, as of now, these two are the most reliable, cheapest, and robust TV transmission technologies available to mankind. May be it is time you also start giving serious thought along these lines.
