Both teenagers and adults alike often have great difficulty finding effective treatment for their chronic acne condition, despite the abundance of products, medications and treatments presently available to them. One option that is growing in popularity is laser acne treatment, with an increasing number of dermatologists and acne sufferers considering it to be one of the most effective treatments today for those with severe acne and/or acne scarring. Traditional over the counter products and medications just do not provide the quick and effective results provided by acne laser skin treatment, making it the recommended procedure of choice of most doctors today.
One type of laser acne treatment is also popularly known as laser resurfacing. In this procedure a concentrated light beam from a small laser pen is applied to the acne. It basically vaporizes the damaged skin tissue with the result being the creation of a new skin surface.
Another approach to laser treatment for acne involves hindering the growth of the type of bacteria that is known to cause acne. Yet another approach focuses on shrinking the sebaceous glands. These are the oil producing glands that clog pores and lead to acne when they get overactive and produce too much oil.
Acne laser skin treatments are relatively quick procedures, usually taking no more than an hour in most cases. Many patients experience superb results after just one treatment, but depending on the severity of you case you may need additional treatments to see the same results. Extra sessions, of course, add to the overall cost of the treatment, which is expensive to begin with, and since most health plans do not cover this type of treatment, cost is a factor that must be taken into consideration when deciding if laser acne treatment is right for you.
Though simple and effective, laser acne treatments are nevertheless invasive surgical procedures that are not suitable for everyone. Those with darker colored skin in particular are known to be poor candidates for this method of treatment, although a highly skilled laser surgeon might be able to make it work for them as well.
Regardless of your particular condition, it is recommended that you consult a laser surgeon and/or dermatologist before you decide on any course of treatment. Everyone’s situation is different and your doctor will be able to advise you on the course of treatment that is best for you.
It is a wise course of action to do as much research as possible beforehand on the backgrounds of the laser surgeons you are considering for your treatment. Ask lots of questions about their qualifications, their experience, their success rate, and ask for before and after pictures of their patients. Also ask for the names and phone numbers of patients that you can contact and speak to directly about their experience with both the doctor and the procedure.
